Seattle Police report a man hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his leg Monday morning will be arrested, after investigators determined the woman who shot him was acting in self-defense, according to SPD.

Police report dispatchers began receiving 911 reports of multiple gunshots in the 100 block of Melrose Avenue East around 11 a.m. April 17.

The wounded man was found in an alley behind Seattle Housing Authority’s Denny Terrace apartment complex and transported to Harborview Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses reported seeing a woman fleeing the area following the gunshots, as well as seeing the alleged victim throw a gun in some bushes near where he was found.

After the man was transported to the hospital, police report the woman called dispatchers and reported where she could be found.

Police later reported that the man would be booked into King County Jail for investigation of harassment following his release from the hospital.

The woman told police she had been in a relationship with the man, and had gone to meet him Monday morning to return his firearm, according to police. SPD reports the woman said the man charged at her with a gun in his hand, so she fired at him, striking him in the leg.

She was interviewed and then released.

SHA communications director Kerry Coughlin tells the Capitol Hill Times the housing authority found out quickly through Seattle Police that the shooting was targeted.

“They didn’t see any reason to evacuate or lockdown the building in any way,” she said.

Coughlin said police told SHA it appears the shooting itself occurred in the alley.

“What we know is we don’t see any ties to residents of the building,” she said, “and the shooting happened outside the building.”

She said neither the alleged shooter nor the victim appear to be SHA residents, based on the names provided by SPD.
